Why Rabies Day Matters
Rabies claims thousands of lives every year, even though it is 100% preventable. Observed on September 28, World Rabies Day reminds us to act. The campaign promotes awareness, responsible pet care, and access to vaccines. Ending rabies is possible- but it begins with us.
What is Rabies?
Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the brain and nervous system. It spreads mainly through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Dogs, cats, and wild animals are common carriers.
Once symptoms appear such as fever, agitation, muscle spasms, or difficulty swallowing rabies is almost always fatal. Prevention is the only real cure.
How Rabies Spreads
Rabies can spread in several ways:
Animal Bites or Scratches – from infected dos, cats, or wild animals
Saliva Exposure – when saliva enters an open wound or mucous membranes
Delayed Treatment – not seeking care immediately exposure
Prevention is Protection
The fight against rabies starts with our actions. Here’s how to stay safe:
- Vaccine Pets – Keep dogs and cats updated with anti-rabies shots.
- Avoid Stray or Wild Animals – Teach children not to touch unfamiliar animals
- Seek Immediate Care After Bites – Wash the wound with soap and water, then get post-exposure vaccines.
- Spread Awareness – Join campaigns and share information on rabies prevention.
